Projects & Collaborations

Working with OtherStory Paper Puppet Theatre

"Escape Was On Everyone's Mind: The Tale of Jack  Sheppard". Heather worked with the collective as Musician & Narrator for this show summer 2016.

Otherstory is a coming together of puppeteers, musicians, activists and artists – storytellers of all kinds, in the recognition that we are all storytellers----- to tell stories that feed and sustain our movements, that connect us to each other across place and time. Stories that run counter to the narratives of the powerful and their project of erasing other histories – other ways of thinking, living and being. Our work reflects a tradition of storytelling which belongs to everyone, that is a continuing conversation between us about our imaginings and realities.

★ Kenya Cymru Call & Response

Funded by The Arts Council of Wales, this was a very exciting cross cultural call and response between Future Hope Montessori School in Kenya, and children from two Welsh Primary schools in Carmarthenshire, Ca'er Felin and Brynsaron. Predominantly musical, it also involved sharing videos, photographs, questions and answers recorded for the other school to answer. And it all happened through the wonderful medium of drop box on the internet. The children composed and responded to each others songs and rhythms in a joyful collaboration.

The Vipingo Village Fund that founded and runs the Future Hope Montessori School in Vipingo, Kenya, became a UK registered charity in 2008. The school educates, feeds and provides a safe haven full of stimulation for 120 AIDS affected children, aged between 3 and 16 years of age.

The end result of the project, apart from inspired children with a better understanding of each other's cultures, was a 59 minute CD of uplifting songs and soundscapes in English, Welsh & Swahili. You can buy the CD, all proceeds of which go to the Kenyan school, hear some of the tracks and watch the Day In The Life videos made by the children in each school.

Carol & Peter Hardman, Founder Trustees: "We are thrilled and delighted to be the lucky recipients of this amazing music project. Heather and her daughter Sian Summers who, together, have explored untapped musical avenues between the two Welsh schools and Future Hope created the project. The project has built true cultural bridges and allowed the children from different sides of the spectrum to have an insight into each other’s lives, enriching both.

Heather is now an ambassador for Future Hope Montessori School, Vipingo, Kenya,

Directed by Luci Gorell Barnes (The Tragic Tale of Little Lupin) and working with dramaturg, Baljinder Bhopal (Shade ) h Squared’s performance 'A Speck on the Horizon' charts one woman’s odyssey through melody and mayhem to mending in a story about the transformative power of adventure, encounter and doing the wrong thing.

Funded by The Arts Council of Wales and  Bristol City Council, as well as a musical-theatre performance, A Speck on the Horizon provided a springboard for a participant performance project around the themes emerging from the show - loss, travel, adventure, being an outsider - using the personal stories emerging from the group. Over five days, and using some of the theatre and music techniques from the show, hSquared worked with participants to create an original theatre performance that was performed in Bristol.
